PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

LBNL has a unique archive of size-farctionated particulate matter samples obtained from around the world's oceans. Samples include those collected in Fe-rich coastal waters near the coast of California and British Columbia, to Fe poor open ocean waters. We also have samples collected during the'purposful'Southern Ocean iron-fertilization Experiment. We propose to apply advanced analytical techniques, including high resolution Inductively-Coupled Mass Spectrometry, and non-destructive synchrotron xray analysis of key elements of this sample collection. The work will form a significant part of the PhD thesis research of UCBerkeley graduate student Phoebe Lam, who is collaborating with Jim Bishop at LBNL. The work will contribute to new parameterizations of ocean biogeochemistry in the global carbon-climate models being developed at UC Berkeley.
